About Dr Brooks |
Dr J.W.Brooks is a Consultant Anaesthetist, specialising in Pain Rehabilitation within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust since 2005. He undertook his Junior Anaesthetic training in the Leicester Royal Hospitals and Specialist Registrar training in London. He further completed a Doctorate (MD) looking at the spinal role of Cannabinoids at Imperial College London with Professor Andrew Rice, and subsequently completed a Chronic Pain Fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore). He has lectured nationally and has publications originating from his MD thesis. He was Course Director for an MSc in Pain Science and Practice at Queens University Belfast, and a Clinical Senior Lecturer also at Queens University. Clinically, he has extensive experience in a wide range of chronic pain conditions, including chronic back pain, neuropathic pain, widespread musculoskeletal pain, post surgical pain.
The management of chronic pain has changed significantly over the last 5 years moving away from a medical solution with medications or injections and focussing on rehabilitation strategies. This is in line with the best evidence and national guidance. |
Goals and Objectives |
Following initial assessment the aim is to provide, a realistic treatment plan, tailored to the patients pain condition which can include, but is not limited to the following; drug treatments, targeted evidenced based injection treatments ( rarely indicated), physiotherapy or psychologically based treatments. |
